NOTE!

You will need to have your Navigator connected in Sync Mode to be able to transfer data to and from it. See related articles links at the bottom of this article for further information.

Start the Hema Navigator Explorer PC application. In this example, we are going to start with NO waypoints added.

Creating waypoints

Waypoint List button

Waypoint List button

Click the Waypoint List button on the toolbar to show the Waypoints List window. As shown in the example below, currently we have no waypoints added.

Waypoint List window

Close button

Click the Close button to close the window for the time being (you CAN leave it open, but it just gets in the way while you are trying to create waypoints).

Add Waypoints button

To start adding waypoints, click the Add Waypoints button on the toolbar. This button is a toggle, and when active, will put you into Adding Waypoints mode. You will see that the mouse pointer has now changed to reflect this, as shown below.

Adding Waypoint mode active

While this mode is active, clicking anywhere on the map will create a waypoint at that location. As shown below, we have created 5 waypoints.

Added waypoints

By default, waypoints are named with an auto-incrementing number, but the names of the waypoints can be changed later.

Once you have finished creating waypoints for the time being, click the Add Waypoints button again to switch Add Waypoint mode off.

Waypoint List button

Open the Waypoint List window again, and you will now see that there are some waypoints in the list, as you see below.

If you want, at this point, you can rename your waypoints, or add a description, etc.

Close button

Click the Close button to close the window.

Saving the waypoints into a file on your PC

Now that you have some waypoints in the Waypoint List, you will need to save them to a file for safe keeping.

Save button

Click the Save button on the toolbar, then select the Save WayPoints to File option from the drop-down menu.

Save menu

You will prompted for a location to save your new waypoint file.

Save Waypoint File window

It is wise to give your file a useful name. ie. calling the file "FranksWaypoints" doesn't really help you in knowing what the file contains. In our example, as we have created a bunch of waypoints around the Linda Corner area, we are going to call our file "LindaCorner-Waypoints".

Everyione has their own way of naming files. Find one that suits you and that you understand. Remember, you may end up with lots of files, and trying to figure out which file has which waypoints in it will be easier with a good naming scheme.

By default, on Windows 7 and Windows 8, the default file save location will be:

C:\Users\<Your_User_Name>\.Hema Navigator\Data

WARNING!

It is important that you save your file in this location. if you do not, the PC application will not know where to find it when you go to try and transfer the data to your Navigator in the next section of this article.

Save button

Click the Save button on the Save Waypoint File window to save the file to your PC.

Transferring the waypoints from your PC to your Navigator

The Hema Navigator runs the OziExplorerCE software to provide 4WD mode functionality.

The OziExplorerCE software has a database of waypoints (the Waypoint List), and it also has the capability of loading waypoint files as Waypoint Sets (See the related article link at the bottom of this article for information on using Waypoint Sets)..

Once your data file is saved on your PC, there are two basic methods of getting the data onto your Navigator:

  1. manually copying the file to the OziExplorer Data folder on the Navigator's SD card
  2. using the built-in transfer functionality within the Hema Navigator Explorer PC software.

The built-in transfer process is shown in this article.

Sending waypoints to the Navigator

Click the Hema Navigator menu above the toolbar in the PC application, and choose one of the two available options to send your new waypoints to the Navigator.

It is important that you understand the difference between the two options, BEFORE you try sending waypoints to your Navigator.

Send Waypoints (Merge)

This option will send the waypoints in the selected file to your Navigator, and merge the new waypoints into the existing Waypoint List.

If you already have a collection of waypoints on your Navigator, and you do not want to lose them, use this option!

When you select this option, a pop-up will appear asking you to confirm your action, as shown below.

Waypoint Transfer prompt

OK button

Click the OK button to start the transfer (or Cancel if you change your mind).

Once the transfer of waypoints is finished, a small message will pop up on the PC screen indicating a successful transfer as shown below.

Waypoint Transfer confirmation

Send Waypoints (Replace)

Using this option will completely replace the existing waypoints in the Waypoint List on your Navigator. If you already have a back copy of the data currently on your Navigator, you can use this option to replace that data with the new data.

WARNING!

If you do not have a copy of your existing waypoint data on your Navigator and you use this option, you will lose the existing data, and there is no way to bring it back!

You have been warned!

Once the data is transferred to your Navigator, start the OziExplorer (4WD mode) program on your Navigator.

Select Page button

Select Page window

Open the Waypoints page by tapping the Select Page button, then choosing the Waypoints page on the Select Page window.

WP List button

On the waypoints page, tap the WP LIST button to open the Waypoint List window.

Waypoint List window

You will see your newly added waypoints here.

As you can see the waypoints have the same name as they did on your PC. Numbered waypoints do not give any clue as to the type or location of the waypoint, which is why you should spend the time and effort to give your waypoints a useful name.
